To learn about the history of paint industry in Iran, we will have to go back to year 1921, when there was no domestic production line for paints and the professional painters then used to make paints using vegetable oils and mineral powders, manually and in traditional manners, in order to paint mainly the palaces and governmental buildings. The first paint factory, Rangsazi Iran Co. (Iran Paint Producing Company) established in 1929, to produce and market oil paints. Later on, the two paint companies named Sarv and Shams, were established
Those years' factory oil paints used to be still produced by vegetable oils and mineral powders.
In 1962, the first paint made using alkyd resins was produced and presented to the market by Plaskar Company
The plastic paint based on Polyvinyl acetate for domestic uses, was produced for the first time in 1959 by Plaskar, followed by such companies as Hawilux , Taba Chemie, Rangin, Dyrop Iran and Super Rang , within the years 1962 to 1968
Indeed, the paint industry in Iran was shaped since 1965 when various paint producing plants were established
Taba chemie, Dyrop Iran, Rangin, Super Rang and Pars Pamchal are among the companies that have been established during 1965 in the country and have produced new products such as wood lacquers, air-dried paints, enamels, industrial paints and automotive OEM and vehicle refinish
Since late 70s, the number of paint manufacturing units increased substantially so that today, there are over 350 authorized paint producing factories with a total capacity of 900,000 tons of various types of decorative and industrial paints.
Besides this, there are quite a number of unauthorized producers who are active as well
The production of resins used in paint industry go back to 1965, when alkyd resin was produced for the first time by Rangsazi Iran Co, and polyvinyl acetate resin was produced by Plaskar. Later on, Pars Sadolin and Dyrop Iran produced alkyd resin and Iran Hoechst produced polyvinyl acetate resin. Today, Iranian resin industry includes over 120 industrial units with a total capacity of 750,000 tons per annum. They are producing polyvinyl acetate resins and its copolymers, various types of alkyd resins and its modified varieties, amino resins, various types of unsaturated polyester, acrylic resins and certain types of phenolic resins
